DBA required for Linux Cloud DevOps role - Max EU120k + Bonus & Shares - Dublin, Ireland

Salary: Maximum EU120,000 plus 20% bonus, shares and good benefits

Well this is an interesting one! Are there any DBAs out there who fancy a change? Cross-training on offer here! A hugely successful and very fast-growing multi-billion dollar ITSM company requires a DBA amenable to being trained up for a DevOps role in a team for their cloud applications. They call this team the SWAT team, which stands for Software Action Team. They need database skills and DevOps skills, HOWEVER they're refreshingly open-minded enough to take a good DBA and train them in the DevOps side. Therefore, do you fancy a change? Fancy learning something new?

Because they'll take good DBAs and train them in the rest, all the experience they are seeking is as follows:

    • A minimum of 5 years of commercial experience as a DBA (Database Administrator)
    • Linux - a good understanding of the Linux operating system: Can be either CentOS or Red Hat
    • Experience in Operations: We mean having worked in a technical operations environment, including incident management, troubleshooting live sites, supporting products and services as opposed to a development DBA.

Please note the above are essential: You require all of the above to be eligible for this role. The main point is they're not looking for a development DBA, but rather one who has worked in an operational environment.

This is NOT a pure database role! This is a chance for a DBA to do something different, if that appeals. The SWAT team's mission is to ensure the stability of customer applications (all cloud-based) and infrastructure services from an operations and infrastructure perspective. Your role in that is to be the last level of support for customers, both internal and external, gain broad knowledge of the applications and codebase, working with all groups within engineering and operations and many outside of operations too.

Therefore, the role is all of systems administration, operations, engineering, data architecture, performance tuning, delivery, troubleshooting, bug-fixing, working with dev teams, liaising with customers and coding in Bash or JavaScript. Sound interesting?

Their database of choice is MySQL, but if you haven't worked with that before, don't worry, they'll train you in that too.

This SWAT team was started in April of this year so, it's still early days for the development and maturity of the team. That means anybody coming in at this stage can help drive how they get to their strategic goal for the group.

As described by the hiring managers:

Coming into my group is a lifestyle change. SWAT is not just about the title it's about lifestyle, how we react, how we own things, how we take it to completion, how we build our understanding of the product of Java, of databases, of operations. It's the whole thing.

I don't think there are many organisations at this point who can offer the stability that we can offer for having a well-established enterprise organisation, but also still having that start-up capability of really being able to put your stamp or something and own it moving forward.

They would be responsible for the upkeep of one of the largest public clouds surrounded by smart people, interesting technology and the kind of start-up mentality that we still have, we own things, we create things, we change things, so that must be a big plus for any guy that likes to develop technically.

The attrition rate within the group is below one per cent. I think that demonstrates firstly that we give people an interesting experience where they're always learning, there's always opportunity to progress and also we're investing heavily in the business in this group moving forward.
